Documents proving the Estonian citizenship

1. Native-born citizen
- if born before 16/6/1940
extract of the family letter or original document which manifests that you hold Estonian citizenship or
- if your parents or grandparents were Estonian citizens prior to 16/6/1940
an original document which manifests that at least one of your parents holds Estonian citizenship, and family status documents certifying your filiation from the parent holding Estonian citizenship

2. Citizen by naturalisation
- certificate of citizenship

3. If a woman acquired Estonian citizenship by marrying an Estonian man who holds Estonian citizenship*
- marriage certificate certifying getting married prior to 26/2/1992, and an original document certifying your husband holding Estonian citizenship at the moment of getting married.
*before 26/2/1992, a woman who got married to a man holding Estonian citizenship, acquired Estonian citizenship by marriage. If a man married a woman holding Estonian citizenship, the man would not acquire Estonian citizenship.

4. A person who was raised in an Estonian children’s home before 1/4/1995
- evidence certifying that you were raised in the children’s home.

5. If the first document is applied for an adopted child under 18 years of age
- decision on regarding acquiring Estonian citizenship to the child by the Police and Border Guard Board *

*Estonian citizenship shall be deemed to be acquired by a child on the basis of a written request by an adoptive parent holding Estonian citizenship. In order to deem a citizenship to be acquired, an adopter has a personal recourse to the service centre of the Citizenship and Migration Department of the North Prefecture. The written decision on regarding acquiring Estonian citizenship by the child shall be sent to the adopter by mail.
